There have been many books and films about Las Vegas. Let's face it, Las Vegas is like the movies in that it is bigger than life, brighter than any of the stars and has a million stories. Everyone has their favorite book or movie. Some of the older movies like Oceans 11 show a long since gone Las Vegas. Vegas Vacation is the perfect movie for people with a gambling problem and underage children with overactive imaginations. Below is a list of books and videos that anyone with an interest in Las Vegas may enjoy. If you are interested in purchasing an item simply click on the item and you will view a page from Amazon.com. Enjoy your browsing!
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
cover Okay, I don't have any kids and I haven't read a single Harry Potter book, but my friends with children say this is the book of the summer, particularly if you are going somewhere like Vegas with kids. Order now and read by the pool.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Book
cover A mind bending trip into the psyche of Hunter S. Thompson. Raoul Duke and his Samoan attorney/sidekick travel to Las Vegas to cover the Mint 400 free for all motorcycle race through the desert. In one of Thompson's first ventures into the gonzo journalism style, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a cataclysmic mix of imagination, hallucination and stream of unconsciousness. This dynamic drugged out duo terrorize hitchhikers, other journalists, each other, casino patrons and personnel, imaginary, hallucinatory creatures and Chiefs of Police in town for a convention. Your head will spin and you'll want to sign up for rehab after reading this chronicle of drug induced mayhem from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.

The transition from book to movie many, many years later was a valiant attempt to capture the spirit of the early seventies drug culture. It just isn't one that flies in the film. While the acting was good and the film had some funny moments it just didn't measure up to the memory (albeit faltering) of the written word. Before purchasing this video rent it and give it a couple of looks. If it tickles your fancy or you are a die-hard Johnny Depp fan, by all means, buy.

While we are on the topic of the good Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, a film starring Bill Murray as the charasmatic writer is worth a look. Where the Buffalo Roam is a peek into the life of Hunter S. Thompson and his Samoan attorney played by Peter Boyle. The movie, while not for all, is an interesting and entertaining montage of everyday events in the diary of a madman during what Dr. Thompson refers to as the "Nixon years". Bill Murray is completely believable as Hunter with maniacal screams and rants and fits of rage against inanimate objects. Watch for the peacocks reaction.

24/7 : Living It Up and Doubling Down in the New Las Vegas Book

This book has received good reviews from the kind people in the alt.vacation.las-vegas newsgroup. I haven't read it yet, but click on the link above to read what others think of the book!
Honeymoon in Vegas -VHS Honeymoon in Vegas -DVD
cover It all starts with "we have to talk" discussion about commitment. Next thing you know, you're on a plane to Vegas to get married. A friendly poker game and life as you know it has been turned upside down. Set at Ballys Casino (what is with Cage and Las Vegas?) prior to the remodelling outside, this video has some interesting shots of Las Vegas as well as beautiful scenery shots in Hawaii. How do they end up in Hawaii ? Here is a hint, its not on their honeymoon! The shot at the pool looks like the old Flamingo pool (if anyone can confirm, please hit the contact us button and drop a line). The situations that Cage gets himself into are a laugh a minute, particularly in Hawaii, where he meets up with Peter Boyle and Pat Morita. The soundtrack to this movie is good old rock and roll. Look for the Elvis impersonators.

Honeymoon in Vegas - Soundtrack

A mix of artists performing Elvis songs brings a new twist to some old standards. After watching the movie, hearing Burning Love will bring an entirely new image to this Elvis (or is it Elvi?) classic. Willy Nelson crooning Blue Hawaii, Billy Joel's rendition of All Shook Up and John Johnnie Cougar, no Cougar, just Mellancamp's version of Jailhouse Rock are just a few of the great songs on this soundtrack. A lively, crank up the volume, put down the roof and ride the Strip CD.

Hiking Las Vegas : 60 Hikes Within 60 Minutes of the Strip - Book

Finally got this book and it is very good for hikes nearby Vegas. I disregarded the advice in the book, got lost, 112 degrees, not enough water, got back to the car and will never hike alone again. Great book for 2 or more people to use to explore the natural wonders outside of Vegas.

The Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas : 2000... - Book

The "Unofficial" series from Frommers is one of my personal favorites. Pack full of travel tips written for the traveller, not the travel industry. If someplaces sucks, this guide will let you know (okay, maybe not in those terms). Where to stay, eat, what to see, what to avoid and what it will cost. Most entries are rated with a star system. One of the few travel books that actually tell you where NOT to go, how not to get ripped off by local scams or worse. A very honest, accurate and forthright unofficial guide to Las Vegas.

Vegas Vacation - Video

The disfunctional Griswold family are off on another family vacation adventure to the City of Lights (no, not Paris), Las Vegas. Watch as the Griswald family fortune dwindles, their marriage is tested (by Wayne Newton - playing a stereotype of himself) the kids grow up - real fast and the lunkhead brother-in-law (Randy Quaid, the goofy Quaid brother) well, drinks. Action takes place at the Mirage, the Riviera and the Neon graveyard (or reasonable Hollywood facimile). A goofy, funny Vegas movie if Chevy Chase comedies are your thing.

Canon HF-10 Flash Media Video Camcorder -Camcorder

Forget about buying a video, make your own, after all, "everything that hapeens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" unless your significant other finds the video on a 16GB flash card.

Lonely Planet Italy (Italy, 4th Ed) - Book

You've seen the Bellagio, Ceasars, and the Venetian now you are ready for the real thing. In case your curiosity was piqued by your recent trip to Vegas, then this travel book may be enough to push you to see the real thing.
